You ll get a better finish and it is near impossible to fit new cornices over existing unless increasing by at least 2 3 sizes up. First use a small chisel to carefully chip away the edges of the crack resulting in a more even surface and then sand away any lumps so that the area is smooth. Sand the area so it s smooth.
